What is Mobile Laser Scanning and How Does it Work?
Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) is a method of collecting highly accurate 3D scanning data by mounting laser scanners on moving platforms. The system uses LiDAR technology combined with positioning systems to capture the geometry of surroundings while in motion.
1
Laser Scanners: Emit laser pulses that reflect off surfaces like buildings, roads, and vegetation.
2
Mobile Platform: Mounted on a moving vehicle or vessel, the scanner captures data across a wide area as it travels.
3
Positioning Systems: GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) provide precise location and orientation of the scanner.
4
Point Cloud Data: A combination laser scanners and positioning systems enables the computation of a 3D "point cloud," representing the scanned environment with high detail.

RiACQUIRE covers a wide variety of tasks in RIEGL's mobile laser scanning systems, including data acquisition, system integration, verification and testing.
All RIEGL LiDAR sensors are supported, along with multiple camera and INS products.
RiPROCESS is the RIEGL software package for kinematic LiDAR data processing. It is designed for managing, processing, analyzing, and visualizing data acquired with MLS systems based on RIEGL Laser Scanners.
With the native support of any raw LiDAR project collected with the RIEGL software RiACQUIRE, it provides a seamless workflow from field collection to analytics-ready point clouds.
RiPRECISION MLS automatically performs adjustments of GNSS/INS trajectories to merge overlapping mobile scan data. It further allows the scan data to be fitted to given control objects. This results in a consistent point cloud of enhanced precision and increased georeferencing accuracy.
FAQs
1 / Do you offer System Integrations?
Please contact us directly to discuss our OEM products.
2 / Are there service providers in my area?
Please contact us directly to get information about Service Providers in your area.
3 / How accurate is a mobile mapping system?
Ground level mobile mapping provides arguably the most demanding of positional challenges in the domain. This is down to commonly GNSS denied environments including urban canyons, tunnels, overhanging trees and forests. It is sensible to avoid extended time in these conditions but is somewhat unavoidable.
Take surveying in Central London as an example! To combat this, RIEGL have developed a software registration engine to ensure mobile mapping point cloud registration is reliable and precise. Have the confidence to survey with multiple laser heads and repeated passes with RIEGL RiPRECISION.

4 / Mobile Laser Scanning and Mobile Mapping Systems: What is the difference?
Mobile Laser Scanning is the placing of a laser scanner - including the positioning and orientation components - onto a suitable platform that can be driven for the purposes of collecting mass 3D geo-representative data.

Mobile Mapping - or a Mobile Mapping System - is a broader description for a Mobile Laser Scanner and is likely to also be carrying a selection of high-resolution cameras.
